Fatigue tests were carried out on the heavy welded joints made of mild steel plate and 600 MPa class high strength steel plate. The crack initiation life, the crack propagation behavior and the fatigue limit were obtained for the welded joints and the simulated machined specimens under pulsated loading. The effect of toe configuration was studied by local strain and fracture mechanics approaches. The fatigue crack initiation life could be obtained by a method which used the cyclic strain range at the toes and the plastic fatigue strength of the material The method took the effects of the stress gradient and the tensile mean stress into account. The fatigue crack growth rate and the fatigue limit could also be calculated with non-linear fracture mechanics analyses which considered the cyclic behavior at the crack tip and at the wedge shaped toe.
