Authors are developing a consumable electrode water jet cutting technique and an automatic oxy-arc cutting technique for the underwater cutting, but a drawback of these cutting techniques is that cut surface must be re-machined by some technique for welding since it is comparatively rough. To solve this problem, authors have developed newly a water curtain type underwater gas cutting technique in which an outer nozzle for flowing water curtain is added to the conventional surface gas cutting torch. Cutting to 50 mm thickness of mild steel at a water depth of 30 cm results in a pretty cut surface which is welded under water using water curtain type GMA welding technique. Cutting speed obtained is much the same as the surface cutting speed.
