The relationship between the V-noich Charpy characteristics and the brittle fracture initiation characteristics in the deep notch test has been investigated. Reliable experimental equations for estimating the brittle fracture initiation characteristics have been obtained by correcting the Charpy characteristics with the strength and the thickness of steel plates. These equations can be applied not only to the base metal but also to the weld including the weld metal and the heat-affected zone.
