In this research, the collinear notches which have the largest influence upon brittle fracture initiation are taken up as the subject of study, and examination is made on deformation behaviors ahead of notch tip and fracture characteristics by the elastic-plastic analysis based on the finite element method, FEM, and by experiments. Main results obtained are as follows : (1) A crack opening displacement obtained by FEM is approximately equal to the theoretical value by E. Smith and also measured value by Moire method. It enables the coefficient of interaction effects of notches to be estimated by FEM. (2) When notches are very contiguous to each other, fracture stress decreases, and at the same time critical COD decreases. Therefore the COD concept is not simply applicable to that case. The reason for the occurrence of such phenomenon is clarified through considerations of the relation between plastic strain in notch root region and COD which are respectively calculated by FEM.
