Temperature distributions in a low alloy carbon steel plate during overlaying a wide bead with austenitic stainless steel by band-arc welding were calculated for various bead widths. Then, thermal hystereses at various portions of the heat affected zone were investigated. Further, secondary thermal hystreses induced by overlaying an adjacent bead were also investigated. Next, aiming to make clear the residual stress and strain changes during stress relief annealing, thermal elastic and plastic stress analysis was carried out by the use of a finite element method. Many useful results are considered to have been obtained by this detail analysis. For example, it has been found that approximately 0.13% tensile plastic strain was possibly induced at the heat affected zone of the lapped portion of bead by 615℃ heating.
