Fatigue tests on plates with transverse fillet welded attachments were performed to confirm the fatigue strength of fillet welds joining the web plate and stiffener of a box girder of a bridge fabricated of 80kg/mm^2 high tensile strength steel. It has been revealed that the fatigue strength of plates with transverse fillet welded attachments is little affected by the fillet leg length, so far as the fillet sizes (8-20mm) adopted in the present tests are concerned. The pulsating tension fatigue strengths (stress range) at 2×10^6 cycles turned out 13.2kg/mm^2 and 11.6kg/mm^2 with non-failure probabilities of 50% and 95%. To improve the fatigue strength, machining of the toe of fillet weld has been found effective. The extent of improvement was minor for a toe notch radius of about 2mm ; when the radius was increased to 5mm, the fatigue strength increased by about 5-6kg/mm^2 and the fatigue life 3-6 times.
