A basic investigation in brazing has been made of the dissolution of solid cobalt into molten copper under dynamic conditions. Cylindrical specimens of solid cobalt were immersed in molten copper and then rotated under peripheral velocities from 19.0 to 61.5 cm/sec in a temperature range of 1190°∿1340℃. A rapid dissolving of the cobalt into the molten copper had occurred and the appearance of a relatively etched surface was observed. The rate of the dissolution had been found to obey an equation of the reducing rate of the cylinder radius, modifying the first-order kinetic equation. The modified equation was used to determine the dissolution-rate constant, K, The K-values varied from 0.55 to 1.61×10^<-2> cm/sec and increased in proportion to the 0.64∿0.74 power of peripheral velocity. The activation energy for the dissolution was estimated to be about 10.0 Kcal/mole. The activation energy of dissolution for diffusion-controlled process is related to the sum of the activation energy for diffusion and some fraction of the activation energy for viscosity. Calculated value of the activation energy for the diffusion process in the cobalt-copper system is larger than the observed one. The rate of the dissolution of solid cobalt into molten copper is controlled by a mixed process involving interface reaction and diffusion.
