Important relationships between the arc interruption of covered electrodes with alternating current and the factors affecting it were exermined. On the basis of this information, a model claiming enrichment of anions for the covered electrode arc was proposed, and thereby the arc interruption phenomenon was interpreted very well. Several experiments were programed in order to confirm the proposed model. Electric field, using a copper ring and electric circuit, externally imposed on the covered electrode arc could reproduce the arc interruption. High density of anions at the outside of the arc column especially in the vicinity of the anode had caused an interruption of covered electrode arc.
