The necessity of high toughness weld joint for low temperature service steels is as high as that for high temperature service steels. This report introduces our development of a three-electrode TIG welding by which high toughness welds can be produced making good use of heat effect. The results obtained are as follows : (1) Welds produced by the three-electrode TIG welding are largely improved, compared with those by shielded metal arc welding, in low temperature toughness due to refining of metallurgical structure as caused by heat effect. (2) The hot wire type three-electrode TIG welding as further developed is equal to MIG welding in weld efficiency and in toughness.
