The voltage between electrode tips correlated with current density and temperature increase is adopted as a monitoring factor. In mild-steel sheet, a nugget is formed near the time at the point of maximum valtage and is enlarged after the time at this point. Adaptability of a monitoring system based on the maximum voltage is discussed in the case of no fluctuation of source voltage. This monitor is useful under the condition of change of electrode force, collapsed electrode tip and weld current shunting. In the case of large voltage drop of power source, a monitor based on integral value of voltage above a certain critical value is useful.
