We obtained the following interesting result of a fatigue test on welded joints of HT80 with reinforcement removed. When the applied stress is comparatively high, the bonded zone is much stronger than the softened zone but when the applied stress is comparatively low, the former is a little less strong than the latter. We introduced a new formula concerning the endurance limit using a function of both hardness and grain diameter as follows, σ=aH 1/(√<D>)+b 1/(√<D>)+cH+d, where σ, H, D and a, b, c, d are respectively endurance limit, hardness, grain diameter and constants. Then we applied this formula to H.A.Z. of the joint welded with heat input 71, 000 joule/cm. So we could explain the fact above mentioned well.
