A 70 Ni Inconel type welding electrode has been widely used for welding 9% Ni steel for low temperature application but it has a demerit of high price. Under these circumstances, new welding materials with lower Ni content as well as joint property not inferior to commercial 70 Ni type welding materials have been developed for low temperature application. 1) Various Ni-Mn-Cr type coated welding electrodes were prepared, on the assumption that austenite welding materials possess excellent welding properties, and that the thermal expansion coefficient at 0℃∿-196℃ of the weld metal should be close to that of the parent plate. Weld metals and weld joints obtained using them were tested. The results indicated that the 37Ni-6Mn-10Cr type welding electrode whose thermal expansion coefficient (8.7×10^<-6>/℃) is comparable to that of the parent plate is as good as the 70 Ni type welding electrode. 2) MIG wire of the same chemical component was tested too. The results indicated that the weld metal by MIG wire has comparable properties to those of the weld metal by coated welding electrode.
