The problems on the static strength and fracture property of fillet welded joints in aluminium alloys by means of TIG and MIG welding are investigated within the range from room temperature to -196℃. The fillet welded joints used are of double T fillet (hereafter called "D.T.F.") and double strapped side fillet (hereafter called "D.S.F.") type. The principal conclusions are summarized as follows: 1) The tensile strength of fillet welded joint is increased with decreasing temperature, and without low stress fracfure. 2) In the fracture aspect of D.T.F. welded joint at low temperature, extreme difference is seen between commercial pure aluminium "1100" and Al-Mg series alloy "5356". Namely, while 1100 shows only the skear fracture rich ductility (θ=20〜30°) at the welded part within the whole range of temperature, 5356 series shows, below part -175℃, tear fracture (θ> 60°) covering the whole surface, atfurthermore the transition phenomena of fracture surfcce are seen and this stage. 3) The fracture surface of D.S.F. welded joint is of shear type in all cases. 4) The relation between shear and tear fractures, and combined stress conditions (R=τ/σ) is discussed, comparing with those for anti-corrosive steel.
