One of the key problems about the overlay welds of the pressure vessels, which are operated at elevated temperature under high pressure hydrogen, is the hydrogen-induced disbonding occurring at the fusion line between the overlay weld metal and the base metal. To prevent this disbonding, a study for improved strip overlay welding process was carried out. It was found that the welding parameters hardly affected the disbonding resistance of overlay welds, as far as the regular welding conditions were provided. The overlay weld metal with an austenitic/martensitic duplex structure provided the overlay weld with good disbonding resistance. This duplex structure can be obtained by using a higher welding current and a higher travel speed than those of the regular conditions.
