The authors have been studying narrow-gap welding for a number of years and have, in the past, suggested explanations for some of the phenomena peculiar to narrow-gap welding. In some previous papers, it was made clear that wire melting rates were not affected by the groove width in electrode positive narrow-gap MAG welding but that, in the case of electrode negative, the wire melting rate decreases with a decreasing groove width. It was proposed that some change in the electric input energy with a changing groove width was the cause of this phenomenon appearing in the case of electrode negative MAG welding, This paper attempts to verify the above proposition by measuring both the heat quantity of the molten droplets (by calorimetry) and the wire melting rates at different groove widths and calculating the equivalent wire melting voltage from these measurements. The experimental results are as follows : With the electrode negative, as the groove width was made narrower, the arc ignited between the conical surface of the wire tip and wire melting rate was 94 gf/min. However, with a root gap of 5 mm, the heat quantity of molten droplets and the wire melting rate were 350 cal/gf and 86 gf/min respectively. Moreover, the calculated equivalent wire melting voltage also decreased with a decreasing groove width. With electrode positive, on the other hand, the behavior of arc, shape of wire end and the transfre mode of molten droplets were not affected by groove width and the heat quantity of molten droplets and the wire melting rate were both unaffected by groove width, remaining constant at 480 cal/gf and 55 gf/min at 300 amp respectively.
