Weld pool oscillation which is applicable to pool geometry measurement was investigated experimentally through arc voltage and arc light emission in GTA welding process. The objectives of this work are to compare the sensitivities of arc voltage and arc light emission, and to figure out the characteristics of pool oscillation signals in full and transition penetration weld pool which is defined to be the intermediate state between the partial and full penetration conditions. An experimental system having the data acquisition and video capabilities was built for the experiment to monitor pool oscillation and corresponding video images of the molten pool surfaces continuously. From the experimental results, pool oscillation through arc voltage and arc light emission showed good cohercece, and arc light was found to be the better transducer to detect pool oscillation than arc voltage due to the volume effect of the plasma region. In traveling full penetration condition, several oscillation modes existed in the molten pool which showed multiple oscillation frequencies. Pool oscillation in the transition penetration condition showed distinct boundary which has the features of the partial and full penetration cases.
