It is well known that laser cutting of aluminum or aluminum alloy is difficult because of the high reflectivity and heat conductivity of aluminum and of the low detachability of aluminum dross. To get the dross-free cutting, the effects of laser cutting parameters on cut quality of aluminum alloys, A5052P and A7075P, were investigated using 1.4 kW and 2 kW CO_2 laser facilities. The plate thicknesses of aluminum alloy used were 1,2,3,4 and 6 mm. All specimens were graphite-coated before cutting to avoid the damage of KCI lens by high reflexible laser beam. We found that the mode of laser beam ( =distribution of energy intensity), beam polarization and the duty of the pulsed beam significantly affect the amount of dross weight. Severe control of pulse duty is necessary to get dross-free cutting of aluminum alloy. A dual cutting techinique was also investigated to cut thick aliminum plate without dross. This technique was available to minimize the dross in laser cutting of 2 or 3 mm thick plate. An observation of laser cutting phenomenon using a high speed camera shows that an interaction between laser beam. and plasma generated from aluminum alloy causes the irregularity in the cut surface.
