An investigation was carried out on bead formation characteristics of fused type SiO_2/MnO fluxes with various angles of electrode inclination. Ripple marks on Ike bead surface were very tough and clear at low SiO_2/MnO ratio, but it became indistinct with an increase in the ratio. And at a very high ratio, the ripples were hard to recognize. The roughness of ripples increased with an increase in the backward tilting of the electrode, and in case of the forward one, the tipples decreased. And this improvement was more successful with flux of higher SiO_2/MnO ratio probably due mainly to an increase in the slag viscosity which suppresses the pool motion. The change in the ripple appearance with the electrode inclination is considered to be attributed to the efficiency of the arc force acting on the molten pool. So, if the electrode is tilted forward to strengthen the arc force, back and forth motion caused by pulsating gas pressure in the arc cavity would be more suppressed, resulting in the calm ripples. And the fact that the electrode angle is more effective at low SiO_2/MnO ratio is considered due mainly to low slag viscocity. Besides, it was confirmed that Si and Mn content change in the weld metal has little or no effect on the bead appearances.
