The effect of water pressure on formation of porosity in underwater gravity welding was investigated within tie range of 0-6 kgf/cm^2 (gauge). The ilmenite type, high titanium oxide type and iron powder iron otide type electrodes of 4 mm in diameter and SM41 steel ban metals of 6 and 9 mm in thickness were used. Alain remits are summarized as follows: (1) Pores are formed in weld metal, when water pressure is over about 0.5 kgf/cm^2. Pores increase with an increase of water pressure. (2) Pores (A-type) in weld metal, which is obtained under water pressure of 0.5 kgf/cm^2, are caused by the concentrated hydrogen at the solidification front. (3) Pores (B-type) are observed in weld metal which is obtained under water pressure of 3-6kgf/cm^2 and special solidification lines are often formed around the pores. A pore is caused by a bubble formed in molten metal, which is trapped by the progressing solidification front. (4) The special solidification line is formed by a repetition of the growth of a bubble at the progressing solidification front and breakaway of the bubble from there. (5) Change of porosity shape, i.e., change of porosity formation mechanism with water pressure is caused by concentration of hydrogen in molten metal, which increases considerably with an increase of water pressure.
