Fundamental studies on the prevention of welding cracks in ultra-high strength steels and superalloys were conducted. Applying 19Cr-12Ni-9Mn type fully austenitic filler metal, low crack sensitivity was obtained in the welding of those base materials as well as stable and sfficient welding. The results of research on the superior properties of this filler metal are summarized as follows. (1) High crack resisting properies are obtained by eliminating the effects of deleterious impurities such as CrS by the effect of Mn. (2) High impact strength is obtained at law temperature due to the elimination of ferritic phase. (3) High heat resisting properties are obtained by the prevention of σ-phase formation and the uniform distribution of M_23C_6 type carbides in the austenitic matrix.
