For some years the senior author has been studied on the pterine pigment in the scale of Pieridae with reference to their bearing on the taxonomy of butterflies, and has since found the peculiar scale limitedly in the male of genus Colias. He tried to examine the all species of Colias in the world assisted by the junior author. They reached to the conclusion that there are two groups in Colias with evolutionary different strains. The primary group (I) has the androgenic black scale (limited in male) in the black band of fore and hind wing of the male and not of the female. The secondary group (II) has not above androgenic black scale in the band of both wings in the male, and has common black scale as in the female wing margin. This androgenic scale is distributed in genus Zerene with the same construction as in Colias and more or less modified form in Catopsilia, Phoebis and Anteos. These facts projected a new problem whether Colias of primary group (I) is antecidential including behri, palaeno, interior, hecla erate, eurytheme, thisoa, eogene and etc. or the secondary group (II) proceeded from the former group including C. nastes, phicomone, cocandica, hyale, meadi, lesbia, vautieri, romanovi and etc. The fact that the form of genitalia brings no exact basis for the consideration of phylogeny in this group is pointed out by Petersen. According to him C. hecla, palaeno and nastes cannot be separated by means of their male genitalia ; and the genitalia of eogene and those of thisoa are not separable from those of cocandica. He described that the relationship and the phylogeny of all these forms are still uncertain as a parallel evolution in at least one character must have taken place within this section of the genus Colias. So if hecla is closer to eogene than to nastes-cocandica, it means a parallel evolution of the genitalia. According to our studies of scales, palaeno is different from nastes which is included in the other group with phicomone and cocandica. The further discussion on the relationship of species and evolution of the two groups will be published succeedingly in this journal. The authors are deeply indebted to Mr. Y. Kurosawa on examination of specimens at the National Science Museum in Tokyo, here express their hearty thanks to him. The names of Colias mentioned in the new classification table were arranged based on real examination of specimens.
