The shattered pods remaining on the defoliated vine of a wild legume, Caesalpinia sepiaria ROXB. var. japonica (SIEB. et ZUCC.) MAKINO, were collected on 16th January 1984 in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Overwintering adult beetles found hiding beneath the partly peeled epidermis of the pods were identified as Sulcobruchus sauteri (PIC). A number of egg shells and a few orifices were found on the seeds remaining on the pods. About one month later adult beetles emerged from the oviposited seeds under the laboratory condition of 24℃ and 13L-11D photoperiod. Rearing experiments in the laboratory revealed that both overwintering and newly emerged adults oviposited directly on the seeds when they were supplied with water, sugar and dehydrated yeast ; neither group laid their eggs without this food supply. The immature stage lasted ca. 50 days under laboratory conditions.
