Embryonic development of osmeteria of Luehdorfia japonica is described. Just after katatrepsis, a pair of rudimentary osmeteria is formed on the dorsal body wall of the embryonic prothorax. Each rudiment then invaginates deeply into the prothoracic segment and differenciates into two parts : the rudimentary sac and gland. During the embryogenesis the sac grows and becomes a large protrusible sac, and the gland develops into an ellipsoidal multicellular gland. Thus the formation of osmeteria complete by the time of hatching of the embryo.
