Observations on an Orphan Nest of Vespa simillima SMITH (Hymenoptera, Vespidae)

Some features observed on an orphan nest of Vespa simillima in Hokkaido, Japan, are given and discussed. The successive utilization of the first comb, in which oviposition should have been ceased in late season, the abundance of cells containing supernumerary immatures and the high percentage of eggs and young larvae suggest the occurrence of worker ovipositions. Out of a total of 238 workers, 14 proved by dissection ovarially developed, and other 27 were supposed so chiefly on the basis of external features, being characterized by the loss of hairs mainly on the gena and mandibular base and the polished head. They are medium-to small-sized ones, disagreeing in this point with the published data as to laying workers. Their striking external similarity to the hairless and polished laying queens in the social nesting stage is pointed out and some considerations on the occurrence of laying workers are given.
