Papilio xuthus exhibits seasonal dimorphism, having a small spring and a large summer forms. Larval photoperiod strongly affected the manifestation of seasonal dimorphism ; a short-day photoperiod (11L : 13D) induced pupal diapause and spring-form adults, and a long-day (15L : 9D) produced nondiapause pupae and summer-form adults. There were two important processes leading to the size dimorphism : Larvae consumed less food under 11L : 13D than under 15L : 9D, and diapause pupae lost more weight during the pupal-adult development than nondiapause ones. The greater weight loss in the diapause pupae might be due to a longer period of energy consumption for the maintenance before eclosion.
