Larval diapause and development of the univoltine nymphalid butterfly Sasakia charonda were examined under various photoperiodic conditions at 25℃. The diapause form with short head horns and the physiological diapause state were induced at the 4th instar by short-day photoperiods of 8L-16D to 12L-12D, and averted by a long-day photoperiod of 16-8D. The critical day-length for the induction of the diapause form was shorter than that of the diapause state. Diapause state was prevented by exposing diapause forms to a long-day photoperiod. This suggests that diapause forms of the 4th instar can enter diapause only when they are exposed to a short-day photoperiod at that instar. During the early larval life, development was retarded under a long-day photoperiod, particularly at the 3rd instar. Under a short photoperiod, on the other hand, 3rd-instar larvae grew quickly. This retardation of early larval development may be important in synchronizing and stabilizing the univoltine life cycle of this species.
