At Ishikari Shore Formica (Serviformica) japonica is polygynous and proliferates the nests mainly by budding. Furthermore, individuals of different nests seem to gather together in hibernation nests in autumn. This temporary internest mixture of individuals has so far never been reported in Serviformica, though in many polydomous species of other subgenera of Formica individuals of neighboring nests mix throughout the ant-active season.
