To indicate, mathematically, the degree of the relationship between the faunae, many methods have been devised by such authorities as Masamune (1931), Jaccard (1932), Motomura (1935), Otsuka (1936) and others. These methods, however, do not give an accurate indicator of the relationship between the faunae because they show only the quantity of the common species between them and fail to touch upon the relationship of the faunistic compositions. The author, believing that the faunistic composition must be considered for a just comparison, tried the correlation method. In this method the correlation coefficient regarding to the variation of the number of species belonging to each element, such as Palaearctic. Oriental, the transitional and others, in two distriets was taken as the indicator revealing the degree of the relation of the faunae. From the results of the investigation of the butterfly-fauna in the Ryukyu Islands, South Kyushu it came apparent that the author's method was more suitable than others.
