Hibernation of a flea-beetle, Phyllotretu vittutu FABRICIUS, which is a serious pest of vegetables in Japan, was studied under the field condition at Kyoto. The results of the research are as follows : 1. Hibernation is possible only in the adult stage. Eggs. larvae, prepupae and pupae all die during the winter season. 2. Mortality of the imagines during the hibernation seems to be very low. 3. Hibernation of the imagines seems to be a temporary suspension of activity due to low temperature in winter, differing from the true diapause in the other inseets. 4. The imagines hibernate in the winter season among the weeds on the field margin as well as under suitable shelter on the surface of the field, not deeply creeping into the soil. 5. The imagines enter hibernation almost uniformly in the late fall when the air temperature falls to about 11℃. 6. Emergence from hibernation occurs at a temperature of about 13℃ in the spring season and it lasts for a rather extended period. 7. There are no sexual differences in regard to the mortality in winter, nor in the behavior related to hibernation. 8. The relation of hibernation to temperature has been studied applying the statistic method of calculation of dosage-mortality curve proposed by C.I. Bliss.
