Taxonomic Study of the Genus Malthodes from Japan (Coleoptera : Cantharidae) I. Discovery of New Species in the Nansei Islands, Southwest Japan

• The genus Malthodes is recorded for the first time from the Nansei Islands, Southwest Japan. Five new species, M. eurypygus sp. nov., M. miyamotoi sp. nov., M. bifurcicauda sp. nov., M. yakushimanus sp. nov. and M. brevicauda sp. nov., and two new subspecies, M. taipehanus ros subsp. nov. and M. hiranoi tokaranus subsp. nov. are described. Malthodes yakushimanus izuinsulicola subsp. nov. and M. hiranoi Nakane, 1977 collected from the Izu Islands are also included in this paper since a part of the fauna of the islands is sometimes considered to be of the Ryukyuan origin. A key to the species of the genus Malthodes occurring in the Nansei Islands, including the two taxa from the Izu Islands is given.
