The process of wing development and degeneration in the winter moth Nyssiodes lefuarius is described. The adult female of this moth has vestigial wings. However, there was no difference in wing development between the sexes until pupation. Even in the beginning of the pupal stage, females retained well-developed wing discs as large as those of the male. After pupal diapause, the male began to develop complete wings, while the wing discs of females atrophied : the wing epithelium retracted from the pupal cuticle, due to rapid digestion by haemocytes that invaded from the proximal part of the pupal wings. This is considered an apoptotic event, or programmed cell death. Such a process is probably unique to winter moths of the family Geometridae.
