Induction of antimicrobial peptide synthesis in the blowfly, Calliphora vicina is analyzed using hemolymph antibacterial activity assay, HPLC mapping and structural characterization. The data obtained demonstrate that diapause maggots enhance their immune response to septic injury as compared to postdiapause larvae and pupae. Antimicrobial peptides produced during diapause comprise defensins, diptericins, cecropin and proline-rich peptides. However, some antimicrobial peptides specific to developing pupae were not found during diapause. The results support the view that insect diapause is not merely an interruption of the developmental program but a sophisticated adaptation involving defense mechanisms such as induction of antimicrobial peptides synthesis.
