Temperature-dependent development of the larval endoparasitoid, Venturia canescens, was studied in vivo and in vitro at 5 constant temperatures between 17 and 33℃. When Ephestia kuehniella was used as a host, successful parasitism was observed at 21, 25 and 29℃. As in the in vivo observation, many of the last instar larvae were obtained in a culture medium at 21, 25 and 29℃. The low thermal threshold for development of V. canescens during the period from embryo to the last instar in vitro was estimated at 12.4℃, which was ca. 1℃ lower than the value for in vivo development from oviposition to larval emergence from host (13.6℃). This is the first report in which the low thermal threshold for development of the parasitoid was investigated using in vitro culture technique. This information may contribute to future studies on the parasitoid biology.
