The mini-review summarizes published and unpublished results on regulation of ovarian maturation and activity of the corpora allata (CA) by photoperiodic and food signals in one model species, Pyrrhocoris apterus. The CA stimulate both pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic growth of oocytes, but a higher activity of the CA is necessary for vitellogenesis. Surgical interventions to the neuroendocrine system in vivo and in vitro revealed that a fine tuning of the CA activity is enabled by interaction of two regulatory mechanisms : (1) slow and irreversible regulation (stimulation or inhibition) associated with changes of the gland size ; (2) fast and reversible inhibition at biosynthetic steps. Regulatory factors from the pars intercerebralis of the brain are most efficiently transferred to the CA via nerves, although they may occasionally reach the CA via humoral pathways if the nerves are cut.
