In a kind of minihistory of diapause ecophysiological studies the pivotal moments are stressed : rejection of autointoxication hypothesis, discovery of the role of photoperiod and latitudinal changes of its critical threshold, conception of diapause development as physiogenesis, effect of photoperiod changes, conception of diapause syndrom, quantitative response to photoperiod and multiple pathways of diapause. In the second part, two obsolete overgeneralizations are rejected : (1) the belief that an exposure to chilling temperatures is a prerequisite for hibernation diapause completion in all cold temperate insects ; (2) The assumption that photoperiodic response is irreversibly lost by diapause completion in all insects.
