Reproductive Compatibility of the Two-Spotted Spider Mite (Tetranychus urticae) Infected with Wolbachia

Reproductive incompatibility occurs between green and red forms of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch. To determine whether the presence of Wolbachia is related to the reproductive incompatibility, males of a Wolbachia-infected green-form population (G^+) were crossed with females of either an uninfected green-form population (G^-) or a G^+ population treated with tetracycline to eliminate all Wolbachia (G^T). No reproductive incompatibility was observed in either cross. When females of a Wolbachia-free red-form population (R^-) were crossed with green-form males from the G^+, G^- or G^T population, reproductive incompatibility was observed in all crosses. Therefore, the Wolbachia of the G^+ population does not influence compatibility of the host, and incompatibility of the two forms is likely to be due to nuclear genes rather than the presence of Wolbachia.
