The egg structures of four Japanese ephemerid species of the genus Ephemera, i.e., E. japonica, E. strigata, E. orientalis and E. formosana, were investigated with both the scanning electron and light microscopes and were compared. The four Ephemera species were classified into two groups, the japonica-strigata and orientalis-formosana groups, by the resemblance of the adhesive layer and mesh-pattern on the chorion and others. In addition, the egg features of Ephemera and/or ephemerids were also discussed, compared with those of the other ephemerid species.
