A survey of sugarcane fields was conducted in the southern part of Okinawa Honto in 1997, to learn the rate of range expansion of the sugarcane cicada, Mogannia minuta, which was restricted only within Chinen Village until 1973. The distribution range expanded only 5 km toward Sashiki Town and 0.3 km toward Tamagusuku Village during 24 years, showing notably slow rate of expansion. The extraordinarily high density of cicadas has been maintained during this period in the centre of the distribution range. Escape of the epidemic cicada population from predators is considered to be an important factor affecting the slow expansion and stability of the epidemic population.
