The genetic characters of the wild populations of the medaka, Oryzias latipes, were studied in the boundary between the Northern Population and the Southern Population in Japan. The two major populations were found to be isolated from each other rigidly, and the boundary was well correlated with mountain barrier. The populations with a genotype different from both major populations were found in the quite limited area around the western end of the boundary.
