An iridescent polymeric material is provided. The new material comprises a three dimensional closely packed regularly arranged structure of uniform polymeric microspheres. The microspheres are obtained from a synthetic polymeric monodisperse latex. The material produced exactly simulates optical behaviors of natural precious opal. The conditions for the formation of three dimensional ordered structure of latex particles which occurs in monodisperse latices are described from the colloid chemical point of view. It was concluded that the order formation cannot be explained by the DLVO theory which has been widely accepted in the colloid chemistry but could be attributed to the Kirkwood-Alder transition in a hard sphere system. The monodisperse latex system has been found to be an excellent model system for the study of structure of solid and for the ivenstigation of the changes of state of matter, such as crystal growth, sublimation, behavior of imperfect gases and so forth, as well as for the studies of the stability of lyophobic colloids.
