The numyelinated nerve fibers forming the olfactory nerve were studied in the pigeon. They were divided roughly into several bundles by the perineurium. Each bundle was composed of many small bundles and surrounded by the endoneurium. A small bundle was separated into several divisions by the mesaxon which is a part of a Schwann cell. In the anterior portion of the nerve, the number of axons surrounded by the mesaxon was several to several dozens. The number in the posterior portion was larger than that of the above portion. The number of olfactory nerve axons, namely that of olfactory cells was about 3, 000, 000 on one side of the mucosa. Neurotubules contained in each axon were about 27 nm in diameter and 1 to 8 in number in the crosssections of the axons. Neurofilaments, about 12 μm in diameter were 0 to 19 in number per axon. The diameter of an axon was 0.22 μm on the average. Fine structure of the olfactory nerve and the number of the olfactory cells in the pigeon were discussed and compared with those of other vertebrates.
