Experiments were carried out to determine the effects of water temperature on the vitellogenesis of Isaza. Keeping the fish under a relatively constant high temperature (17.5-21℃) from summer to autumn inhibited the vitellogenesis of ovarian oocytes. However, vitellogenesis started in all of the fish kept under a diel thermoperiod from September 17. Isaza experience conspicuously fluctuating temperatures daily and annually in their diel vertical migration in Lake Biwa. Though it is still not clear whether diel temperature fluctuation is absolutely necessary for the onset of vitellogenesis, the seasonal temperature fluctuation of the upper stratum where Isaza remain at night may be important, singly or in combination with the low and constant temperature of the lake bottom.
