The structure of the dermal gland was studied histologically and histochemically. Two types of glands were distinguished by the presence or absence of accessory cells in addition to the principal cells in the glands. The glands with accessory cells were further classified into three types on account of the staining properties for histological dyes and of the results of histochemical reactions of the secretory granules of the principal cells. A) Acidophilic gland: The principal part of the gland consists of two types of cells; one with acidophilic granules and the other with gigantic granules and cytoplasmic vacuoles. B) Basophilic gland: Basophilic granules and small vesicles are present in the cytoplasm of the principal cells. C) Pseudo-acidophilic gland: The secretory granules of the principal cells are weakly acidophilic. The secretory granules of these three types of glands were positive for histochemical reactions for protein. The accessory cells of the glands contained many small cytoplasmical vesicles. The inclusion of the vesicles seems to be lipoprotein from the histochemical reactions. The gland without accessory cells is chromophobic gland which consists of two types of cells; one with the granules of mucopolysaccharide and the other with lipoprotein vesicles.
