The effect of acceleratory nerve on the spontaneous discharge was studied in the cardiac ganglion of the spiny lobster (Panulirus japonicus). By repetitive stimulations (30-60 cycle) of the acceleratory nerve the membrane potential of the soma depolarized slightly, and both the diastolic slow depolarization and the sustained potential of the burst discharge increased. The membrane resistance of the soma decreased slightly during the repetitive stimulation of the acceleratory nerve. However unitary EPSP, corresponding to the firing of the acceleratory nerve, was not found in the records from large somata. The acceleratory effect was also observed in the preparations deprived of the small cells in the ganglionic trunk. This fact indicates that the acceleratory nerve can affect directly the activity of large cells. Some speculations were made on the mechanism of the acceleratory effect in the large cells.
