Opalina japonica, a parasitic protozoa in the frog, Rana japonica, is ellipsoidal and flat in form The anterior end of this organism is somewhat wider and flatter than the posterior end, the body surface of which is not smooth but uneven. At the body surface, there are many ciliary meridians running obliquely in the long axis of the organism. Between two ciliary meridians, 5 to 16 pellicular ridges, which are continuous longitudinal folds running parallel to the ciliary meridians and rising perpendicular to the body surface, can be recognized. Near the anterior end of the body, these ridges appear to be immersed in the ectoplasm, decrease in number, and finally a falx is formed. At the area of the falx, these ridges can not be recognized at all and consequently the ciliary arrangements become very irregular. The ridges contain about 20 tubular filaments which are 25 mμ in diameter and demonstrate a periodic structure at a spacing of 35 mμ. Although these filaments form a sheet-like arrangement being perpendicular to the general body surface, the course of direction of these filaments is parallel to that of the pellicular ridges. Between two neighboring filaments, moreover, it was newly found that a number of the materials are connected to each other. The pellicular surface which makes up the ridges often demonstrates various kinds of waves and outswellings like blebs. Also an unevenness can be observed at the bottom between two neighboring ridges.
