The localization of β-glucuronidase in regenerating rat liver was histochemically observed with a new method employing naphthol AS-OL glucuronide as a substrate. The activity of β-glucuronidase in regenerating liver appeared to be lower than that in normal rat liver, especially in the periportal area of hepatic lobules. Granules staining for β-glucuronidase in hepatic parenchymal cells, localized chiefly in pericanalicular cytoplasm in the resting cells, disappear with the onset of cell division and, instead, these granules appear in the astral region during the metaphase of a dividing cell.
