Morishita and his family collectedtwo juvenile specimens of this species from the waters off Osugawa (Numakawa) at Togonoura, Shizuoka Prefecture, in 1960-1961. The colour of these specimens in formalin is greyish-black with some pale wavy transverse markings on each side of the body. Curiously enough, the specimen (a) has pectoral fins narrower and pointed, while the other specimen (b) has ones distinctly roundish in shape. In the literature at hand, this fact is stated as "young fishes of this species have pectoral fins rounder than those of adult ones which are pointed." Both of my specimens, however, have nearly the same dimensions which are measured by me as follows:- No. Total length Body length Height Length of pectoral fins a 158mm 123 45 27 (pointed) b 157 125 44.5 29 (rounded) Therefore, it may apparently be considered that the two froms have occured even in the young stages of the species. The caudal fins of (a) and (b) are not so deeply forked as in those of the adult or subadult ones. On the 9th of August, 1961, I obtained one specimen of this species with the total length of 305mm, which has pointed pectoral fins. This species attains the total length reaching to 900mm., so that the 3rd specimen in my collection is a subadalt one. The general colour of this specimen is greyish-black with silvery underparts without distinct markings at all.
