It is necessary to save vertically the quantitative sampling from many desirable depths in a single haul. A new apparatus which is equipped with a submersible pump to collect the plankton and water samples was deviced. The sampler consists of a cylindrical water vessel and 16 or 24 storing plankton nets which arranged circulerly on a net-plate from which is removed easily by the rotation ofthe ratchet which is turned by action of the piston situated on the upper plateare hanging within it. The pump couples to the completely submersible electric motor which is fully used in the deep water. It is 100 volt AC, 1/8 horse power and is rated at about 25 liters per minute with no head. The pump with 1/4 horsepower is used when it is necessary to collect a large quantity of plankton. The sampler is used vertically aboard an anchored vessel, especially from bottom tothe superficial layer at desirable depth by turns, and also to obtain many quantitative measurements in a short period of time. On sailing vessel it is also employed in horizontal sampling continuously for a long distance. The sampler is placed on deck and from which the vacum horse with a hood-bulb hangs into the water. The machine is operated by the time switch.
