As what is supposed to be the contractile fibrils which act to contract the body, the membranous structure (the limiting membrane) and the band-like structure were recognized in a ciliate, Condylostoma spatiosum, under ultra-thin sections. While the former lies between the ectoplasm and the endoplasm, the latter lies near each ciliary line and runs parallel to it, and both seem to have connected each other. The authors designated the former as the membranous myoneme and the latter as the band-like myoneme respectively. The band-like myoneme runs parallel to the body axis or runs to the direction of contraction of the body. Two kinds of myonemes are closely packed with very thin fibrils, being 30-40Å in diameter. The fibrils composing of the membranous myoneme seem to be arranged in an irregular way, but those of the bundle-like myoneme are somewhat regular in their arrangement and most of them point to the direction of body axis. And the band-like myoneme is situated near the longitudinal fibrillar bundle, however, the connection to the latter can not be observed. Moreover, there are no membranes which wholly envelop the band-like myoneme, but a few large-sized vesicles are always found around the surface of the myoneme which faces to the body center.
