In eggs which have once been subjected to temperatures higher than that of the laboratory sea water before insemination, cleavage, was more or less accelerated. The relation between the rate of cleavage and the quantity of heating was found to be complicated as illustrated in Figs.1-3. The percentage of cleaved eggs at the 90the minute after insemination followed the equation of 31.2 _e2.303(t-24.4)cot(89.80^<0.0004(T-17.5)>), where 15 t 90 minutes and 17.5 T 27.5℃. It is supposed that two factors may exist in the egg which participate in the regulation of the cleavage rate. Of these factors one which is more sensitive than the other plays some important role in accelerating cleavage and the other in retarding it.
